From the University Daily Kansan (Lawrence, KS):
When film students attended a question-and-answer session with Patty Jenkins yesterday afternoon at Oldfather Studios, they probably expected to hear her speak about her experiences writing and directing Monster. What they probably didn't expect was Steve Perry, former lead singer of Journey and Jenkins' friend, to accompany her.

Jenkins, a Lawrence native, said Perry was helpful in explaining some of her artistic frustrations during filming and the struggles artists endure in general. She cited him as her "personal spiritual guru," who was there for her when no one else was.

Special for The Journey Zone:

Kevin Chalfant (The Storm, Two Fires) has released a new album, Back to Square One. This is not Kevin's typical rock fare. As he says on his website, “Faith is really what drives me, especially in this day and age when the world has so much negativity going on. Somehow I wanted to let that show through a batch of songs more than I typically would on a rock record.” With standards like "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" and "The Old Rugged Cross," Kevin has reversed the tradion of the late Ray Charles, Journey's inspiration Sam Cooke, and even some modern Christian bands that made the move from Gospel or Christian music to pop. In what is perhaps a sign of the changing times, Kevin has gone in the other direction. For more information, and to purchase Back to Square One, visit Clique Records.

Steve Smith sent out the following newsletter this week:

Greetings,

Vital Information is about to leave for a tour of the USA. Frank Gambale, Baron Browne, Tom Coster and myself are ready for our USA tour with new music from our recently released CD, Come On In. Check our Touring page for details, plus I've listed most of the dates below. Come on down and see the band when we are in your area.

This has been the busiest musical year of my life!! There are photo galleries of some of the highlights of my 2004 tour dates at www.vitalinformation.com/.

The first part of 2004 was dedicated to a USA tour with Buddy's Buddies. I had a ball playing the music of Buddy Rich with Steve Marcus, Andy Fusco, Baron Browne and Mark Soskin. The band has evolved into a very tight and creative unit that burns every time we hit the stage. We are already booking dates in 2005!

I did a lot of clinics around the world for Sonor, Zildjian, Vic Firth, Remo, DW pedals and Shure. My tour schedule included a Canadian clinic tour, an Australian clinic tour and, in the USA, many "local chapter" PAS clinics. Some of the highlights of my clinics were a Toronto clinic/concert duo with South Indian mrdangam maestro, Trichy Sankaran; the Chicago Vintage Drum Show and the Ultimate Drummers Weekend in Melbourne Australia with Gregg Bissonette, Marco Minnemann, Chad Wackerman and Dom Famularo.

The group Summit, which is comprised of George Brooks (sax), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Fareed Haque (guitar), Kai Eckhardt (bass) and myself on the Sonor Jungle Kit, was able to fit in a short tour in April.

The members of Vital Information set aside some time in March to record a new CD for Tone Center Records. It is quite difficult to get everyone together because we all have such busy schedules. Between my clinics and touring with various groups, Tom Coster touring with Billy Cobham and Bill Evans, Frank Gambale touring with Chick Corea and Billy Cobham, and Baron Browne touring with Billy Cobham as well as being in demand in Boston, finding time to record is almost "Mission Impossible!!" We spent nine days recording new music that we had worked on over the last year and half of touring and writing. We're all very pleased with the results. We call the album Come On In. I am currently working with my agent, Janet Williamson, booking tour dates to bring our music around the world into 2005.

Baron and I also found some time to record three tracks for the new Andrea Boccelli record. My friend Corrado Rusticci produced the three tunes - two of them are on the CD - called Andrea, which was released November 9. I also recently narrated (along with Mike Mainieri) a Hudson Music documentary on the life and music of the great drummer and vibraphone player Lionel Hampton, to be release early 2005.

During the summer I had the good fortune to tour all over Europe with the all-star band Soul Bop featuring Randy Brecker (trumpet), Bill Evans (sax), Hiram Bullock (guitar), David Kikoski (keys) and Victor Bailey (bass). We played at some of the biggest jazz festivals in Europe and I was able to see and hear some other great music while on tour. We shared the stage with Herbie Hancock/Wayne Shorter, James Brown!!, Dave Douglas, Billy Hart, Marcus Miller and many other incredible artists. The last week of August Soul Bop played at the Iridium Jazz Club in NYC. We recorded the Friday and Saturday night shows for a live CD that will come out in February 2005.

Also in Europe during the last week of July, I taught at the best "drum-camp" there is, "Rhythm" in Marktoberdorf Germany. The staff included Ed Thigpen, Jeff Hamilton, Johnny Rabb, Thomas Lang, Russ Miller, Hakim Ludin, Juan-Carlos Melian and Karuna Murthy. I think the teachers had more fun and learned more from each other than the students. We all performed together and worked out various duos, trios, quartets and full ensemble pieces.

In the autumn I did a European clinic tour for Sonor Drums, which took me and Sonor A&R Milan Goltz through Italy, Austria, Germany, Holland and ended up at the "Drummer Magazine Live" event in London, during that gig I had my friend Pete Lockett, an incredible tabla player/world percussionist, join me for an "Indian drumming duet." For those of you interested in learning more about Indian rhythms check out Pete's great website: www.petelockett.com.

To those of you who have written to me this year, I apologize for not getting back to you. I have been so busy I haven't had any time to check my e-mail and answer questions. At this point, I'll never catch up!

On a very serious note, Frank Gambale's mother recently passed away from terminal cancer. Frank understandably wanted to be in Australia with his family so he did not tour with Vital Information on our recent tour of Europe. Frank recommended NYC guitarist Vinny Valentino to take his place for the tour. Vinny did a fantastic job learning the music with two weeks notice, plus Vinny was on tour in Russia with another band at the time. To check out Vinny go to his website at: www.vinny.com. The Euro tour was a great success, to see some pictures of the tour go to the Photo Gallery page on our website.

Coming up in 2005, some Vital Information gigs in Los Angeles, CA and the San Francisco Bay Area as well as Beirut, Lebanon and Moscow, Russia. Watch the www.vitalinformation.com website for additional tour dates. I'll also be touring with Buddy's Buddies in 2005. Date will include headlining the Berks Jazz Fest in Reading, PA (March 14) and a week at the great NYC jazz club, The Iridium (March 16-20. Again the dates are listed on my website as well as below. In May of 2005 I'll be touring New Zealand for two weeks as a special guest of the Rodger Fox Big Band, should be fun!

Also, check out my recent features in the November 2004 issues of JazzTimes and DownBeat. November is National Drum Month so there are many great drummer interviews in those magazines, including Louie Bellson, Ed Thigpen, Jeff Hamilton and Freddie Gruber!

Hope to see you on the road, Steve

[See the TOUR SCHEDULES page for Steve's upcoming dates--Ed.]

From Robert Fleischman:

Robert Fleischman announces the release of his latest work. We are pleased once again to keep you updated on the very latest of Robert Fleischman's career and to announce the official release of his four latest musical projects in December 2004. This is an exciting time for Robert and his fans with lots of new music on the horizon. Though primarily known as a rock and roll singer/songwriter, much of his new music is a bold departure from the past and takes an exciting new direction that once again underscores Robert's trademark cutting edge and always-adventurous musical vision.

  • Dreaming In Tongues - A beautiful and sometimes surrealistic voyage with cello and acoustic guitar taking a minimalist instrumental approach. Robert's vocals bring the whole thing together making this CD a classic and an original by any standard.

  • The Lord’s Prayer - In this Christian contemporary rock release, Robert writes and sings a hauntingly beautiful melody to the Lords Prayer.

  • Kinetic Phenomena - This Electronica release is a heavy duty mixture of pulsating rhythms and hypnotic soundscapes that will definitely alter your consciousness!!

  • Electric Raindrops - A beautiful arrangement of soothing ambient sounds.

  • New Order – AOR Fans are anticipating this work in progress which is Robert's follow up release to the "World In Your Eyes" album on Frontier Records. Featuring a bonus track with an acoustic guitar version of "Wheel In The Sky".

Spirit Box Music now offers Robert’s CD’s via: his website @ www.robertfleischman.com, eBay, and soon distributers near you. Robert is currently available for interviews regarding his new work. Please contact us via the website for scheduling.

    From the Associated Press:
Journey, the power ballad rock group that dominated the charts in the 1980s, stopped traffic on a stretch of Hollywood when hundreds of fans turned out to see the band unveil its own Hollywood Walk of Fame star.

Present at the sidewalk ceremony were guitarist Neal Schon and bassist Ross Valory, who were in the group's original 1973 lineup, as well as keyboardist Jonathan Cain, drummer Deen Castronovo and lead singer Steve Augeri , who replaced Steve Perry in the mid-1990s.

"Who could have imagined, so many years later, a star on the Walk of Fame," he said. Schon then thanked fans for nominating the band for the sidewalk tribute.

Perry, who was not scheduled to appear, showed up on his own, organizers said.

"No one ever mentions the unsung heroes, the road crew who ... made us look good," he said.

Over a 30-year period, Journey released 18 albums, selling 50 million copies on the strength of radio hits such as "Don't Stop Believin'," "Who's Crying Now," and "Open Arms," which were fueled by Perry's operatic, high-flying vocal style.

The group, which last released a studio album in 2001, was scheduled to mark the occasion with a performance in Hollywood later Friday.

    From Ask John Kalodner:
    Question:
"Is there any news on the 2nd Journey DVD? It seems there was talk about it & then nothing. We (the fans) are diligently working on seeing that Journey gets nominated & inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for 2006...this would be the perfect time for that DVD to come out (plus, I personally want one) :)"
    Answer:
"I think that Steve Perry and I will probably start to work on it this Summer and hopefully it will be released by Christmas."

CD contains bonus live track (not filmed),“The Party's Over, (Hopelessly In Love)” Special collectors edition arrives in stores November 15 on Columbia/Legacy

At the very top of the short list of second generation San Francisco rock bands stands Journey, with over 43 million records sold in the U.S. alone, the only Bay Area group whose 30 years of music has truly stood the test of time. Now, the two-disc DVD-plus-CD collector's edition of LIVE IN HOUSTON 1981 – ESCAPE TOUR is set to arrive in stores November 15 th on Columbia/Legacy, a division of SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.

The two-disc package is a first for Legacy – presenting video and audio versions of this LIVE 75-minute performance – with the DVD and CD completely remixed in Stereo and 5.1 Surround by Allen Sides and remastered by Bob Ludwig. The Stereo CD version of the concert includes all the above performances plus a bonus track that wasn't filmed, “The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love),” which originally was a studio version they had released earlier in 1981, as the single from the live double-LP, Captured. A lavish 16-page full-color booklet is packed with rare photography of Journey, tour memorabilia, and other surprises. The DVD has interviews with the band and a slide show of rare photos.

The entire project was produced by former lead vocalist Steve Perry, with the full cooperation of the band.

Five of the live performances from this historic MTV concert have been released prior to now: “Open Arms,” “Who's Cryin' Now,” “Don't Stop Believin'” (three of the hit singles from Journey's then-current 9x-platinum Escape album), “Stone In Love,” and “Anyway You Want It.” The balance of the tracks, include such Journey touchstones as “Wheel In The Sky,” “Lights,” “Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin',” “Mother, Father,” “Line Of Fire,” and the title track from the Escape album, which are LIVE and all previously unreleased. They make their debut on this special package – premiering the concert in its entirety for the first time ever.

Journey's strength at Album Oriented Radio (AOR) was so strong that their live double-LP Captured (February 1981), actually yielded a #2 hit on Billboard's brand-new Album Rock chart with the studio version of “The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love).”

Their seventh studio album, the all-time best-selling Escape, was co-produced by former engineer Mike Stone (known for his studio work with Queen, Kiss, and others) and Kevin Elson. The album was released the first week of August 1981, coinciding with MTV's historic sign-on of 12:01 a.m., August 1 st . Escape was pumped up by the summer take-off single, the top 5 “Who's Crying Now,” which earned the band a prestigious spot opening for the Rolling Stones at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia on September 12th – the same date that Escape hit #1.

The album was still inside the top 20 two months later, when Journey rolled into Houston and MTV, still in diapers, decided to broadcast the concert. In fact, as Journey stayed on the road well into 1982, and the next three singles all ran up the charts (“Don't Stop Believin',” “Open Arms,” “Still They Ride”) through the following summer, Escape stayed in the top 20 for over a year. In all, the LP logged nearly three years (146 weeks) on the chart, on its way to 9x-platinum.

The Journey saga carried on for another five years in the '80s, with the Frontiers album in 1983 (6x-platinum, with the top 10 “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)”); and 1986's Raised On Radio (double-platinum, with “Be Good To Yourself”). Despite the fact that they swept the annual BAMmies (Bay Area Music Awards) in 1987, a disbanded Journey's members went their separate ways. A decade of outside projects began, as Schon and Cain formed Bad English with John Waite, and Perry resumed his solo work.

The inevitable reunion took place in 1996, when the classic lineup – Schon, Perry, Cain, Valory, and Smith – reconvened on Trial By Fire . The platinum CD contained the only RIAA gold single of Journey's career, “When You Love a Woman.”

On May 8th of 1998, Steve Perry and Journey officially went their separate ways.

Lineup : Steve Perry (lead vocals); Neal Schon (lead guitar, vocals); Jonathan Cain (keyboards, vocals); Ross Valory (bass, vocals); Steve Smith (drums).

    19 December, 2006
    Official Press Release from JourneyMusic.Com:
JOURNEY NAMES JEFF SCOTT SOTO OFFICIAL NEW LEAD SINGER

December 19, 2006 -- Jeff Scott Soto has been officially named the new lead singer of Journey. He had been filling in for Steve Augeri, who had to leave the U.S. tour with Def Leppard shortly after it began on June 23 due to illness.

"We are so grateful to Steve for all the years he dedicated to Journey," says Journey in a joint statement. "We thank Steve for all his hard work and we wish him only the best in his future endeavors. Over the past few months, we've come to realize that Jeff has proven himself above and beyond that he can sing the hell out of our songs and we're happy to officially welcome him as part of the family. We're excited to start a new chapter with Jeff and we're excited about what the future may bring."

Steve Augeri states: "Singing for Journey these last eight years have been the most challenging and the most rewarding of my career. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the band, and especially the fans, for the privilege of being part of a musical legacy that has touched so many hearts and souls. I wish my fellow bandmates success and happiness as they continue to make great music in the future, as I will strive to do the same myself."

Jeff Soto also adds, "With delight & pleasure, I am accepting the offer to continue my tenure with Journey now as their permanent vocalist after the amazing past months we've spent together on tour. I also pay high respect to Steve Augeri for coming in and helping Journey continue their legacy for nearly the last decade and to Steve Perry for co-creating this legacy. I hope to now add and help drive Journey into the next stage of this band's future."

Since Soto's first appearance with Journey on July 7 in Bristow, VA, his performances have been garnering rave reviews. To wit:

"Right off the bat, Journey's new lead singer is fantastic. Jeff Scott Soto is a supremely talented vocalist who handled with ease the many sky-high notes and the mile-long range in Journey's repertoire. Steve Perry fans have never gotten over the original lead singer's departure from the band, but I'm here to tell you this guy rocks the role. And yes, if you close your eyes he sounds just like Perry, but -- dare I say it? -- maybe even more passionate and full of verve. Hits such as 'I'll Be Alright Without You' and 'Wheel in the Sky' showcased his mighty voice." --Lorilee Craker, Grand Rapids Press

"The one-time Yngwie Malmsteen vocalist channeled (Steve) Perry flawlessly, nailing all the high notes and then some.Soto's got it going on." --Christopher John Treacy, Boston Herald

"Could Soto cut it? Yes. And then some. His vocals and stage presence were impressive." --Dave Ferman, Ft. Worth Star-Telegram

"Soto is a really strong vocalist, so instead of struggling to emulate (Steve) Perry's laser-beam vibrato, he can get away with a style that mixes grainy power with effortless key changes." --Johnny Loftus, Metro Times Detroit

Steve Augeri is currently recording his debut solo album, In The Moment, due out the summer of 2007. He's also putting the finishing touches on the much-anticipated follow-up to the AOR classic Tall Stories album, launching early next year. For more info, visit www.steveaugeri.com.

Journey--Neal Schon (guitar), Ross Valory (bass), Jonathan Cain (keyboards), Deen Castronovo (drums) and Jeff Scott Soto (vocals)-are currently mapping out plans for 2007.

He had been filling in for Steve Augeri, who had to leave the tour shortly after it began on June 23 due to illness. Jeff’s last performance was May 12, 2007 in Leesburg, VA.

According to guitarist Neal Schon, “We appreciate all of Jeff’s hard work and we can’t thank him enough for stepping in when Steve Augeri got sick last year. He did a tremendous job for us and we wish him the best. We’ve just decided to go our separate ways, no pun intended. We’re plotting our next move now."

Keyboardist Jonathan Cain continues, “We were lucky to have a friend who was already a Journey fan step in on a moment’s notice during the Def Leppard tour to help us out. Jeff was always the consummate professional and we hope that he remains a friend of the band in the future. We just felt it was time to go in a different direction.”

Journey--Neal Schon (guitar), Ross Valory (bass), Jonathan Cain (keyboards) and Deen Castronovo (drums)—is taking the rest of 2007 off to spend time with their families, write new songs and map out plans for 2008.

    From JourneyMusic.Com:
JOURNEY WELCOMES ARNEL PINEDA WITH “OPEN ARMS” TO THEIR FAMILY AS THE BAND’S NEW LEAD SINGER

After much speculation…the wait is finally over.

JOURNEY--Neal Schon (guitar), Jonathan Cain (keyboards), Ross Valory (bass), Deen Castronovo (drums)--is proud to introduce fans all over the world to their new lead singer, Arnel Pineda (“pin-eh-da”). He replaces Jeff Scott Soto, who parted ways with the band earlier this year after stepping in for Steve Augeri, who had to leave the band in 2006 for medical reasons.

Arnel hails from Quezon City in the Philippines and has been singing Journey songs--in addition to original material--with his band, The Zoo, for the past couple of years in clubs all over his homeland. Joining the legendary band is a dream come true for him. “It’s so exciting to sing with one of the best bands in the world. It’ll be a lot of hard work on my part and I’m actually looking forward to the scrutiny I’ll get from the hardcore JOURNEY fans. I know they’ll expect me to sound exactly like ‘the voice’ (Steve Perry), but that will never happen. I know there's only one Steve Perry in this world.”

When it was time for JOURNEY to look for a new lead singer, the internet came to their rescue. Guitarist Neal Schon wanted someone new to the music business, so he turned to YouTube. After finding Arnel singing “Faithfully,” he knew he had found the perfect frontman.

“I was frustrated about not having a singer,” explains guitarist Neal Schon, “so I went on YouTube for a couple of days and just sat on it for hours. I was starting to think I was never going to find anybody. But then I found The Zoo and I watched a bunch of different video clips that they had posted. After watching the videos over and over again, I had to walk away from the computer and let what I heard sink in because it sounded too good to be true. I thought, ‘he can’t be that good.’ But he is that good, he’s the real deal and so tremendously talented. Arnel doesn’t sound synthetic and he’s not emulating anyone. I tried to get a hold of him through YouTube and I finally heard from him that night, but it took some convincing to get him to believe that it really was me and not an imposter.”

Arnel Pineda picks up the story: “My friend Noel picked up the message on YouTube and told me it was from Neal. I thought it was a hoax so I ignored it. Noel said, ‘what if it really was Neal and he wanted to offer you the chance of a lifetime?’ So I e-mailed Neal back and the rest is history.”

“Arnel brings a soulful and passionate voice to JOURNEY,” continues keyboardist Jonathan Cain. “His personality is very well-suited to our music. He’s a sincere, authentic person with a great smile and a big heart. I think fans are really going to love him. With Arnel’s soaring tenor, Journey returns to our heritage sound.”

Schon agrees, “We feel reborn. I think there’s a lot of chemistry between the five of us. At first we were going to go into the studio and just write 4 songs, but now it’s escalated to a lot of great new and diverse material. The stuff sounds tremendous. Everyone’s so stoked about it. We feel very fortunate to have found Arnel.”

JOURNEY is currently working on a new album with legendary producer Kevin Shirley, which they hope to release by spring/summer 2008. Details will be announced early next year.

JOURNEY DEBUTS NEW LEAD SINGER IN VINA DEL MAR, CHILE
By Sergio Carmona for the Journey Zone
I live in Chile, where a nationally famous song Festival is taking place these days and Journey is performing at this very moment! Arnel Pineda sounds exactly like Steve Perry! Honestly, I'm not a huge Journey fan, just heard their most famous songs and know some Steve Perry songs, but I can tell you that Journey is back with a very good singer. Here are the YouTube feeds.

    From Melodicrock.Com:
    MORE CHART SUCCESS FOR JOURNEY:
Journey's new 2-disc CD Revelation has entered the national Top 100 charts in 6 countries in its debut week of release in Europe. With shipments already outselling the predecessor Generations, Revelation entered the charts in Sweden at # 28, Germany at # 35, Great Britain at # 68 (# 5 in the indie charts); Netherlands at # 72; Switzerland at # 89 and Norway at # 97.

These results mark the band's biggest first week's sales since 1996's Trial By Fire and one of Frontiers Records best overall sales results in its 10 years of history. Released June 6 in Europe on Frontiers Records, Revelation consists of two cds, the first with 12 new songs, the second is filled with 11 re-recorded classics. All of the music on Revelation was produced by Kevin Shirley (who previously worked with Journey on the Trial By Fire album).

Revelation marks a new chapter in the legendary career of multi-Platinum rockers Journey, thanks to two singles at Rock and AC radio (“Never Walk Away” and “After All These Years”) and rave reviews, including the Classic Rock Magazine in the UK, who hailed: “…There's over an hour of music here and if you buy the full-on version you'll get a bonus disc where Journey re-work a slew of their classic songs. Life doesn't get much better than this”.

Journey are currently touring the UK according to the following schedule:
    06/19/08 Manchester Apollo Manchester, England
    06/20/08 Clyde Auditorium Glasgow, Scotland
    06/22/08 Civic Hall Wolverhampton, England
06/23/08 Cardiff International Arena Cardiff, Wales
    06/25/08 National Stadium Dublin, Ireland
    06/27/08 Nottingham Arena Nottingham, England
06/28/08 Metro Radio Arena Newcastle Upon Tyne, England

And this message was posted online by guitarist Neal Schon last night: "Just back from our first show in the UK, London. Had a great time tonight and were greeted by a very cool, enthusiastic crowd to say the least. But actually, all the crowds have been great!

But what I'm really writing you about is that before the show (15 min.'s before we went on) the band's hanging out backstage going over our set list. (We added quite a bit of songs tonight). Anyway, in walks...hello! Get this! Jimmy f*$! Page! He calmly walks up to me and says, "Hello Neal"...like I've known him a thousand years or so.

Honestly I have to tell you, I was completely in awe, not quite believing I was standing there talking to Jimmy Page about music and continued to you until we had to go on stage. Wow. What a mind-boggling moment for me. Felt like a little kid. What a true gentleman and obviously a brilliant guitar player. He was nice enough to take a photo with the band and I, (which we will be posting here soon). I gave him our new Revelation package, he thanked me, then I shook his hand and went on stage. Honestly I felt like I had the fear of God watching me and didn't want to make one mistake and did the absolute very best performance I could.

I was told later, after we got off the stage, he had said to our manager that he enjoyed my playing. As in the words of Flavor Flav-wow! Then, we came off stage and as we were drying off, in walks Chris Squire from Yes. He told all of us that he enjoyed the show too.

Reflecting back; last year at the same venue, Brian May shows up. This year; Jimmy Page and Chris Squire. Maybe next year Jeff B. or Eric C.?

Anyway, just had to share that with you. We're all having a great time. BTW; sold another 90,000 units. Up to over 200,000 copies now just over 2 weeks out so Thank you, Thank You, Thank You for allowing us to make new music and being there. It means the world to us.

Looking forward to the rest of our gigs overseas as well as getting back to the states and starting the US tour with Heart and Cheap Trick. Will truly be a great summer." Neal.

And for the record, week 2 ended with the band selling 89,240 units for the week. That's just a 15% drop from the debut week, putting the album at #6, down from #5 on the Billboard chart.

The Collective Expands Bass, Guitar, and Keyboard Curriculum

A member of The Collective School of Music (NYC) board of directors, Steve wants to let everyone know that The Collective has announced a new initiative to expand its bass, guitar, and keyboard divisions.

Started in 1977 as The Drummers Collective, the school was renamed The Collective in 1997 when it broadened its curriculum to focus on rhythm section performance. A series of new courses and special events will be offered this year to broaden the full scope of the school.

The courses will be taught by high-profile artist/teachers, both online and at The Collective's Greenwich Village Manhattan campus at 541 Avenue of the Americas. As part of the expanded curriculum, The Collective will also be organizing new pro-level performance ensembles made up entirely of members of the student body. This will give students the opportunity to perform on a high level outside of the school environment.

The kick-off event will be a pro rhythm section master class taught by Steve Smith and the members of his "Vital Legacy" band on Monday, February 15th, at 7:00 p.m. The class will feature Steve Smith (drums), Mark Soskin (keyboards), Vinny Valentino (guitar), Baron Browne (bass) and Andy Fusco (sax).

This event will be open to the public. Tickets are $25.

In addition, The Collective is announcing a special four-class course with world-renowned guitarist Wayne Krantz. The course will be based on Krantz’s book, An Improviser’s OS, which lays out his unique approach to improvising. This course will have limited enrollment. Classes are scheduled to begin in April.

    New Korg Wavedrum

Steve is excited about his new Korg Wavedrum!

Wavedrum responds instantly to any and all playing styles, from subtly-nuanced tapping and stroking to aggressive rhythmic assaults. From traditional acoustic percussion instruments to unique sounds previously impossible to obtain, Wavedrum serves up an enticing treasure trove of sounds.

Traditional hand-drum techniques, such as adding pitch and tonal changes to a strike by pressing the head, have been previously unobtainable on an electronic instrument. Wavedrum can process and respond to these intimate performance gestures as no other instrument can.

Steve is having a blast working with the Wavedrum and implementing it into his playing. Check it out at http://www.korg.com/Wavedrum.

    18 February, 2011
Journey giving preview of new album at Planet Hollywood, by Mike Weatherford, Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Jonathan Cain knew the "Glee" thing was going to be big.

"I've got two teenage daughters that keep me abreast of what's going on in teenage world," says the Journey man who turns 61 on Feb. 26. They assured him, "This is huge, OMG."

Yes it was. "Don't Stop Believin'?" became the Fox TV hit's de facto theme song and set download sales records for a song that first hit the Top 10 in late 1981. The TV cast's remake was nominated for a Grammy, and Cain was in the audience with his 17-year-old daughter Sunday when it lost to his friends from Train.

"Good for us and good for 'Glee,' " Cain says of the song for which he plays the immortal piano lead-in as the group's keyboardist. "Glad they can get some mileage out of a song that's almost 30 years old now."

Cain says he saw it coming, even before the song's inclusion in the "Rock of Ages" Broadway musical that paved the way to "Glee." When Journey regrouped in 1998 and started to play "Don't Stop Believin'?" live, "it was the one that always resonated with the kids, and they would always start charging the stage. I knew something was up. I didn't know how big it was going to get.

"It's kind of neat to see that side of it through their eyes, how the young generation perceives us," he adds. "Journey's sort of ageless in that sense. We're not like some old creeper band from the '80s with long hair that nobody cares about."

Journey, in fact, seems the one veteran group that's been aided rather than diminished by drafting a younger, sound-alike singer -- 43-year-old Arnel Pineda -- to replace the voice of its '80s heyday, Steve Perry. "We like his energy. He's brought a lot of heart and soul to this band," Cain says of the quintet still helmed by founding guitarist Neal Schon.

The Filipino Pineda also inspires a lot of national pride. "When you can play Manila for 40,000 people, that kind of works."

Come May, however, Journey wants to quit looking back and start living as a present-tense band again. Wednesday's audience at Planet Hollywood's concert hall is due for a three-song preview of the new album, "Eclipse," due May 24.

Cain describes it as "a concept record with some spiritual themes to it. Pretty tough, hard-hitting stuff. This is Journey with big combat boots on. And helmet and a rifle."

Cain's lyrics sustain the band's hopeful themes of "searching for soulfulness and enlightenment and love and all the stuff that Journey's about." But the album also has a larger dynamic sweep with "some darker stuff in there."

"We just felt like it was time to send a message to the world about how we feel about life in general," he says.

The album incorporates Hindu principles of Tantra, "the belief that life is kind of a weave, a circle of energy, a life force that's woven with the universe in all of us. We dove deep into it."

Cain goes so far as to call the album "one of those headphone records."

That's a genre that may take a bit of explaining for younger "Gleeks."

Show producer and host Redbeard talks with Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain and former Journey frontman Steve Perry about how the stars aligned to create the band's most successful album to date. Jonathan Cain, the newest member of the band at the time, remembers the unique position Journey found themselves in during the making of Escape. "4 Years Ago Today...", by Ross Muir
Well, yesterday, but I'm 24 hours late, sorry.

Expiry of Non-Disclosure Agreements must be in the air or something...Jeremey Hunsicker has just posted a nice candid summary of his audition and rehearsal weeks with Journey and the confirmation he was offered the job. [See below for full text.]

Jeremey and I talked about maybe doing a Q&A on this on the Fabbers site a few months back but, in retrospect, that would have come over a little 'Nyah Nyah Nah-Nah Nyah' and me or the site calling JRNY out again (for the umpteenth time). Been there, done that, wrote the real Untold Story. This is a much cleaner clear-the-air way to go.

And nice to see it corroborates a lot of what I wrote some 3 years back, including the references to the demo's of a couple of Revelation songs (I have copies of the songs with JH singing them, so this is all fact, not further fabrication) and the fact he wasn't just considered for the gig at the mic, he was indeed offered it.

And any JRNY related post that manages to incorporate the word "fabrication" in it somewhere gets a seal of approval from me.

Nice touch, Jeremey Frederick Hunsicker. I salute you.

Now go and buy his new single, 'This is Your Life' (yes, it does sound like them, yes, it does sound like him, but lovely lyric written about getting to watch his young family grow up) available on i-Tunes...or check it out on his site or on YouTube.

Full text of Jeremey Hunsicker's Blog entry, Four Years Ago Today:
Four years ago on this, the last Monday in June, my life was changed forever.

Sabrina and I had just flown back from San Francisco the night before, after an amazing week as the guests of Journey. I had spent the week rehearsing with the band, touring the beautiful San Francisco and Marin wine country. I had dined with rock and roll royalty, men who had the power to change lives with a single phone call, and with no more thought than it took to order Chinese carry out.

After a performance at Journey’s warehouse for Irving Azoff, the band’s management, friends, and family, we dined at a great restaurant in downtown Healdsburg CA (the name escapes me). I spent the evening talking with a great member of the band’s team, an listening to Neal and Irving trade stories and rumors about the other bands Irving was working with.

The next day, Sabrina and I were escorted around the Bay area as the band had a business meeting to decide on whether to move forward with me in the lead singer position. One of the highlights of the trip was a side tour of Pixar studios, during the preparations for the release of Ratatouille. We sat at John Lassetter’s desk, saw Steve Jobs’ (abandoned) office, and went into the animators’ studios, where each office was a customized “set” of the animator’s own creation. Some were gingerbread houses, some were 1940's style bars, some were French cafe and noir movie theaters. It was pretty amazing.

The next day I met privately with the band and their management, where I was offered the job with Journey. While their management denies this ever took place (when contacted by places like The Washington Post), it’s a total fabrication to prop up the story of finding Arnel – that is still being peddled to media even today during promotion for their new CD.

I’ll make this clear for emphasis: during that meeting I was offered the job to sing for Journey. Any other way of double-talk by the band and their management is, to be certain, a lie.

After talking with Sabrina the night before and exploring all of the implications of such, I was prepared and did accept the job on the spot. The offer didn’t come without a few conditions on both sides, but the agreements were made amongst us all, and we spent the remainder of the next two days working on songs that would eventually become the Revelation CD, finishing the songs “Never Walk Away” and “Where Did I Lose Your Love.” In fact my demos were learned by Arnel for the recording of both songs, right down to his replicating my mispronunciation of a word during the demo of WDILYL.

So we flew home, lives surely about to change forever. Quinn was due in September, and I was to live off a five figure monthly stipend to commute back and forth to SFO and finish the record. When touring began in February I’d begin a five figure weekly salary with bonuses, in addition to my publishing and work for the Wal Mart CDs.

So it was four years ago this day that I spent the day on the phone with Jon Cain, the accountants, the management, the lawyers, working out the details of the above paragraph. Mid afternoon, things were done. I would spend the next phase of my career as a millionaire rock star, leaving my life as a college educated suburb living white collar sales rep, raising my family on the road. Securing my children’s future financially and bringing them up in a way I never dared to dream as a child.

Jet lagged, giddy, nervous, Sabrina and I finally took a nap that afternoon. I was awakened not three hours later by the phone.

It was Journey’s management. Neal had gotten cold feet. He wanted to wait. “Let’s talk again later this year,” was the word. Neal, who had exhibited a few nasty personality traits during my visit, was not a guy I was going to pin my hopes on.

Nobody in the band or management could explain Neal’s action. Cain didn’t even know the call had taken place. I thought about this day for years after. Laying awake at night, every night. Watching the creation of the story of Journey’s new singer, found homeless in the Philippines. He lived out of a car! He barely spoke English! Management thought Neal was crazy, but according to Neal he had spent TWO WHOLE DAYS (!) on YouTube and was ready to give up! Never mind the fact that Arnel’s management had put multiple videos of his as comments on my Frontiers videos during that month (he shouldn’t have been too hard to find, LOL!).

The story was told and sold. In the space of a few hours on this day four years ago, I was promised the world – millions, a life I never dared dream of for my family. And on one man’s whim, it was jerked right away.

I wasn’t going to play the game. I walked away. Ironic, that sounds real similar to the title of the song I co wrote, the song that got me my platinum record. “Welcome to the music business,” is what I was told by John Baruck that day. Seemed a callous thing to say at the time, but he was right.

You play the game or the game plays you.

I’m releasing my own CD this summer, “Every Little Thing.” And I’m making it in part as a response to that challenge. Make it in the music business, play the game. But now I’m making it on my terms. Sure, I’ll be selling it while singing Journey songs. Big deal. Sure, it won’t sell but a few hundred copies, if I’m lucky. Welcome to the music business, right?

One thing is for sure. I couldn’t have made this record without Journey. Without Neal Schon and his bipolar approach to career management. For that I’m grateful. Cause it’s a record I’m proud of, and a record my FRIENDS AND FAMILY helped me make. A record I couldn’t have made at any other time in my life.

Four years ago today, I became a prince and a pauper within a matter of hours. Welcome to the music business.

From Monica Goldenberg of the Fans First Coalition:
As a fan of Journey, I thought you might be interested in learning that they have signed on as part of the Fans First Coalition, a new group dedicated to protecting fans from deceitful ticketing practices, and in checking out the Coalition website: http://www.standwithfans.org.

In recent months, there has been an increase in the number of direct fan complaints and media coverage documenting fans experiences and how they fell victim to scalpers and unsavory business practices. Together, the Coalition members are taking a stand to improve the ticket-purchase experience for fans.

Along with other artists, band mangers, sporting teams and venues around the country, Journey has committed to ensuring that fans have greater access to reasonably-priced tickets and enhanced protection against fraudulent business practices. The Coalition was formed to combat this growing problem, as far too many ticket-buyers are being misled by scalpers who do not act in the fans’ best interest.

I hope you’ll consider sharing the news of Journey’s involvement with the Coalition and the link to http://www.standwithfans.org with your fellow fans on The Journey Zone. You can also join the Coalition conversation on Twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/standwithfans) and Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/standwithfans).
