Post: "Growing up in the 80's I was always a big metal fan (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, DIO, Slayer,Metallica, ect.)One thing that always blew me away was that the headbangers would usually wear metal shirts to school and every one of them seemed to own a journey shirt. You would see a guy wearing a Anthrax shirt one day and the next day he would be sportin a Journey shirt. All I can say is that Journey really had crossover appeal in the 80's. These are the same metalheads that would kick your az if wore a michael jackson or hall & oats shirt, but for some reason they thought Journey was cool."

Post: "Oh my, oh my, where do I start? Oh, yes, at the beginning! I went to the bank to deposit my check for safe keeping. I stopped by a display case entitled in bold letters, 'Remember this?' at the local grocery/one-stop-shop. I browsed. Who caught my undivided attention and grabbed me, rooted to the floor, staring agape with my mouth hanging open in utter astonishment and shock? It was an album cover pic. of Steve A. and his friends from Tall Stories! WOW!!! I couldn't believe I'd actually stumbled onto it!!! It was THE only copy, too... so I grabbed it and made my way toward the checkout. YESSS!!!! Oh, yeah, ooohhh... Lady Luck smiled on me! I told the cashier (she looked to be around my age) about being sooo happy to find Steve's CD. I told her that Steve is the lead singer of Journey. She said she loved Journey in the '80's. I told her to check them out again, they're still great!! I told her that I'd gone to the concert at the Gorge, and how fantastic it was, and she said thanks! She had NO idea they were back together! I have been listening to this EXCELLENT CD over and over... wow!! I can hear one very talented gentleman of Journey singing with his heart and soul!"

Post: "Here's the hypothetical (and I stress hypothetical) situation: You're the Journey manager. A bad reaction to make-up has forced KISS to pull out of the Aerosmith/KISS summer stadium tour. Aerosmith management offers Journey an 85 minute, no encore, opening spot on the stadium tour at the same rate of compensation the band is receiving for the 'Main Event' tour. Current contractural obligations not withstanding, do you accept the offer?"

Post: "The green one is tuned differently (not sure which tuning he is using).....anyway, 'Higher Place' requires the guitar to be tuned differently than the other songs. That's the main reason for switching guitars. That, and to get a different tone sometimes....like for 'Lights,' on the DVD, Neal uses his 1963 Strat to get that great sound. I talked to Neal at the Gorge and he said he leaves that '63 at home now, because it's too fragile. He's playing a nice, brand new white Strat this tour."

Post: "Okay, I'm awake now...and wanted to share some more thoughts about last night's show...

"One thing that has occured to me the last couple years...

"It's hard on the bands to have a show at these 'outdoor' arenas when the first act has to go on when the sun is still high in the sky. I felt bad for Styx, as they were giving their usual 'all' and doing their usual high energy show. But, being first, promptly at 6:30, they played their entire set with the sun not even close to setting, and people not quite into yet... a phenomenon I have not witnessed at the indoor shows I've seen (Vegas, etc..).

"That aside, Styx came out and got right to rocking with a killer version of 'Too Much Time On My Hands.' With that, at least the front half of the venue was on their feet, singing along. Styx kept that momentum thru their entire 65 - 70 minutes. The only down times were when they brought out the new tunes. As if all connected by remote control, the entire audience sat down in one big wave from front to back when the new tunes would start.

"Only the third of the three new songs they played did people stand up, but that was due in large part to Glenn Burtnick's high energy singing and running through the audience while singing the song.

"Musically they did the usual bang up job. Only glitch was Glenn's wireless transmitter for his bass was having problems, and you could hear the audible "crackle" of the cutting in and out as he reached around to change 'channels.'

"REO SpeedWagon. Man!!!! I haven't seen these guys do this tight and high energy of a show since about 1984. From Neal Doughty's opening synth portamento slide on 'Ridin' The Storm Out,' to the last notes of 'Roll With The Changes,' REO did not let the crowd sit down. As I described in my previous review of Journey's set, the crowd stood, danced, and sang along to every song. Did Kevin talk? Yes he did...but heck he's been doing that since the first time I saw them in 1978. And last night's story was funny.

"They ended the show, the encore, with '157 Riverside Avenue,' which to me is one of the most arena friendly, rocking, live songs out there. It just a has a groove and energy that makes you tap your foot.

"Again, I was really impressed with REO last night.

"As with the other bands, the glitches were small. Dave's (guitar-player) in ear monitor stopped working midway through the second song, so he just removed them and tossed them to his tech side stage.

"During 'Roll With The Changes,' Tommy Shaw came out to sing with Kevin. OOOPS!! Sound dude forgot to bring the fader up on his mic. Being the pros they are, Kevin just handed Tommy his mic and went on. By the next verse, both mic's were operational.

"Anyway, that's my take on the night. You can read my Journey review here or on the 'on The Road' page.

"Whatever it was, last night's show was simply the best all around performance I've seen from the modern era Journey since I saw them at the Vegas gig (dvd show). Heck, all three bands were awesome."

Post: "I was listening to the Journey live DVD and I noticed something. I have only known of two singers in my life that used their voice like an instrument. Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin and Steve Perry. Both these singers did more than sing. It was like they were using it as an instrument. And they sure could play.

"But then I watched and listened to Steve Augeri on the DVD and it was obvious to me that he too uses his voice as an instrument as well. And play he did. This man is a part of Journey because he can sing.

"This brings me to another thing I have always known. Neal Schon sings with his guitar. He just doesn’t play, he sings with it. That’s why his solo album Voice is named such.

"So the way I look at it is when you have a singer who uses his voice as an instrument and a guitar player who uses his instrument as his voice and then you throw in a keyboard player, bass player, and drummer whose talents are above the bar of professional musician…then you have no better rock group out there than Journey. If you listen they don’t do it like anyone else. Maybe that’s one of the reasons this band stands out. They are like no other."

Post: "Even if it were true, so what? Both acts that you mentioned are pretty well-known for their song-writing, and have written some great stuff, regardless of whether that is your favorite type of music or not. The Bee Gees in particular have had an amazing career that has covered a lot more than just the disco that everyone knows about. If you look into their history, you'll find out that they have a huge catalog of rock and even bluesier music than you might imagine. The best show I have ever seen on VH-1 was the Behind the Music on Journey (serisously!), but the second best was the Legends show on the Bee Gees. Very impressive was that band has done, especially in the U.K. They certainly have my appreciation."

Post: "Tall Stories! It ROCKS! You can get it by really digging through bargain bins. Check around, or look at songsearch.com. My favorite 'Spice Girl' Cinnamon recommends it! She says that you can find a lot of stuff there. Also there is Tyketto. there are two CDs, and I already forgot which titles. Oh, GeckoGirl! Can you help my Swiss Cheese memory out? I just got Tall Stories and I've been addicted to it, and my newest acquisitions, Frontiers, ROR, Journey, and Next... If you want to see my review of Tall Stories, you can find my thread called 'Holy Moses!! Someone Call the Sisters of Mercy!' It might be back a few days on page three or something, but a search of my name will pop up that thread. I know someone told me about the other two CDs there. Sorry, I can't remember at the moment!"

Post: "Just watching my collection of Journey videos before I leave for the American Airlines Center in Dallas to catch tonight's ZZ Top/Kenny Wayne Shepard/Double Trouble Show. To some of you, I am about to state the obvious here.

Most of you know that Journey fans are THE most passionate fans of any rock band. If you don't believe me, just read JDK interviews posted here. Ask anyone connected to Rock music.Journey generates more mail/email/comments etc....far and above most other groups. In my view, it is no surprise at all.

Before I continue, I must say that I love Steve Augeri. This guy is pure gold. The way he has stepped in the last few years is phenomenal. Last week in Dallas his performance was awesome. As we watched last Sundays show from the edge of the stage a friend of mine said "Man, there was no one on the face of the earth that would have been a better choice for Journey than that guy". No doubt.

We all realize how great Steve A.is.But IMHO, the Steve Perry stuff will NEVER go away. The reasons are clear. If you ask anyone who knows anything about music, Steve Perry was/is one of the top 5 greatest vocalist of all time.It is a widely accepted fact. I remember my late uncle who was 63 and a fan of big band music, hearing Perry on TV and telling me..."That guy can sing". For him to say that.....well you know. For someone who is the greatest of all time at what they did, the memories and discussion will never sudside. It is naive to think otherwise.

Member for member, there is no band who has had a more talented roster than Journey. This band was not just an invention of a record company to churn out hits. This band has always been comprised of 1st class musicians. Heavyweight players and songwriters.

Let's take Neal. Again, not just my opinion, but everyone in music know's Neal as one of the top rock guitarist of all time. Remember at age 15 or 16 Eric Clapton ask him to join his band. The same friggin week, he was ask to join the hottest band on the planet-Santana.The rest you know. Neal is not just my personal favorite musician of all time, he is one of the greatest of all time. Not just the run of the mill eighties guitarist who has since slipped into obscurity. His is without peer.

Jonathan Cain. Have you read how many songwriting awards he has received? When was the last time you looked at the roster of entertainers, from a large cross section of the industry, who have recorded his songs? He is an outstanding solo artist on his own with a number of brilliant solo releases. His deep, beautiful keyboard textures, vocals and so on.....well it is impossible to overstate what JC has meant to this band. Just look what happened after he came on board. Look at his song writing credits. The man is brilliant.

Ross- Always solid,Journey aside, he has supported some of the top names in the business. Like most bass players,he never get's enough credit. Ross is a rock solid professional. He keeps the heart of Journey beating strong. He is always there.

Drummers - Dean. Boy what a great thing to bring him on board. WOW, does he have the street creds.Ozzy and the list goes on and on and on and on. Along with being a great drummer, he is a great person. Adds a great ROCK edge. Love it.

Steve Smith - Legendary beyond Journey. Top drummers in the world. He studied under the masters. Now he is one. All modern drummers site Steve Smith as a mentor. He is a much sought after clinician A great drummer of all styles. Rock, Jazz...you name it. Again , there is no way to overstate his greatness.

Ansley - I won't go into it but take some time and look up who he has played with...just a couple of names , Bowie - Lennon.

Greg Rolie - I would bet that there are many here who have not seen the movie Woodstock or any of the footage. Just take a look. In my opinion, Greg is one of those handful of musicians who laid the ground work for modern rock. From his Santana days and beyond. This man was there, on stage with the legends. All of them.I miss Greg on stage with Journey.

I have always thought that Journey is under rated because of their success. Sounds strange right? The corporate rock label. Like JC said in BTM. That label came from jealously and envy. To some it is fashionable and chic to bash or marginalize anything that was high profile in the 80's.It's B.S. All you must do is attend a Journey concert and I would wager that the would passe' would be the very last way you would describe the band.

I don't get as upset as some of you do about the Perry comments. With Journey, it just so happened that all the planets aligned to bring together some of the greatest musicians of all time.Is this a gushing overstatement...maybe. But In this case, it is the absolute truth. I love Journey past, present and future...and I always will. On my way to the AAC. Later..."

Post: "I love ROR! For a long time, I have felt that ROR had some of the best music. While it is very studio driven, perhaps that is what I like most about it. The music quality is extremely clean. The balance between voice and music is perfect. The songs fit the title to a "T". This was a record meant for radio. I look at this record and feel that Why Can't This Night Go On Forever could have been one of their biggest hits. It could perhaps be their best ballad since Faithfully and anything after. I know many people look at the personal inner workings of the band and what took place and dislike it for that. And as for the "Perry solo record similarities" well, lets be honest. Bands write, play and produce what best fits the man out in front. They play to their strenghts and Steve's voice was "One" of their strengths...yet it was the most recognizable. Any song that they wrote, especially after the arrival of JC was very vocal driven. Those songs fit that voice perfectly. Combine that voice with the other qualities that the band brought, and you have what we got. Is ROR different from Escape and Frontiers? Yes. I love it because of that."

Post: "This is all what Journey for me, grimbsel, stands for:

'As we were heading down the hall towards our buses, we heard Steve Augeri singing "Open Arms" and he too was having an exceptional night. Without saying a word, we all took a right and headed toward the stage. For the next or so hour we stood on the sides of the stage and sang and danced to Journey who were having what appeared to be a great night too. Suzy Young even said to me, "This reminds me of the old days..." and I knew what she meant. I was immediately thrown back to the late 70s, early 80s when I would go to a Journey show and it was wham bam and then wham bam again, they came at the audience guns a'blazin', one smokin' song after another. Bravo Journey men.'

this note is from Tommy shaw on the styx site. What can you say more about Journey?"

Post: "I have read a lot of concert reviews here and noticed some of the posters complaining about the loud noise at the concerts. I just wanted to point out a few ear plugs that are out on the market that can make going to concerts more enjoyable and save your hearing at the same time. There are ear plugs made by etymotic research called ER-20 http://www.etymotic.com/ which reduce the sound by 20 db and they are only $12 plus shipping. You can also find similar products at www.musiciansfriend.com and www.zzounds.com although they may be more expensive. If you live near a music store, stop to see if they have some and save yourself the shipping charges. I don't recommend the cheap foam plugs made by Hearos (they are like 50 cents for a pair of them). They don't do anything but muffle the sound. They also have custom fit ear plugs out on the market but I think they run around $100-$150 a pair. By the way, I'm not affiliated with any of the sites listed above. I bought a pair of the ER-20's last year and have used them for every concert since then (around 12 concerts). These are re-useable earplugs. I recommend these especially for those who are taking children with them to concerts. Also, check to see the db reduction amount when buying the product. Some only reduce the sound by 12 db and others by 15 db. I found the 20 db reduction model to be perfect but others may even want the 25 db model. If any other members know of similar or better products, please add to this post. If you are like me and still want to keep rockin' into your 60's and 70's, then you need products like these to save your hearing."

Post: "Hi everybody! This is just a 'fun' concept I have been thinking about and it has nothing to do with who´s best or something like that, just like the movie Freddy vs. Jason which is a no win situation for both...I think this little experiment of mine is built on 'humour.' So what I want to know is, what concert would you choose if these two bands played at the same time on different stages. Stage 1: Perry Project, featuring Steve-Lead Vocals, Gregg Rolie-Keyb,vocals, Lincoln Brewster-Guitars, Randy Jackson-Bass, Steve Smith-Drums and they were only playing stuff from Infinity, Evolution, and Departure. And on the other stage, Journey with the present formation doing songs from Escape up to Red 13. Seems like a tough one or...?"

Post: "Okay, so I'm at work this morning and my phone rings around 7:30. It was Chris Jackson of 98.5 KFOX calling to congratulate us on the Hollywood star! (I had emailed him a copy of the press release last week.) The first thing he asked me was "Is this really for real?" LOL Once I assured him it was not a hoax, Chris asked if I wouldn't mind going on the air with Greg Kihn. Greg, Chris and I talked for about 10 minutes. They were amazed about the star and teased me about the band being in the ground with Bette Davis and other movie stars. They also mentioned how Journey hasn't even been nominated yet for the RRHOF and what a shame that was. We chatted about the cost, how people now will be walking all over them, etc. One of the most interesting questions was if I thought this would bring Steve Perry out to "bury the hatchet" with the band. I commented that it would be great to see Mr. Perry again after all of this time and Journey fans world-wide would welcome his appearance at this event. There was more chit-chat about how Greg didn't want a star because only bad things have happened to him in LA. LOL They asked me to call and let them know when a date was set. After I hung up, Greg talked more on the air about how many millions of records Journey has sold, how great they were and mentioned again (as he often does) that he toured with them back in the day. What a way to start the morning."

This show in Philly will be extra special because I have been a Journey fan since 1983 when I was a 4-year-old boy singing and doing all of the moves to the 'Seperate Ways' video...LOL. The music that has inspired me in a lot of romantic ways. Especially with Arrival. Yes, I have used some of their lyrics to express myself romantically. Seeing Journey is what I look forward to every summer. I pray that they tour every summer for as long as possible. I hope that they stop aging so I can still them when I am 60. Its an event. I want to get there hours early in hopes that I can say hi to my favorite member Steve Augeri."

Post: "What a show! It was my first time to the BJC and I have to admit it is the best venue I have been too so far. STYX and REO were amazing. Those two bands really got the crowd going and ready for Journey. I really like how both of those bands work the crowd. The bass player for STYX has so much energy running around IN the crowd like he did. Journey was OUTSTANDING! The entire band looked well rested and ready to go. Steve Augeri sounded perfect. I did notice that Steve was using a wired microphone instead of the usual wireless. I wonder why he made the switch? It could be because of the sound. Usually a wired mic has a stronger sound that wireless. I was happy that Steve saw my sign! On one side it had, 'Steve Augeri Rocks!' and the other side had, 'Take us to a higher place!' "

After a short break to free Grenada from the Whigs and a misguided attempt to start a chain of aglet repair stores, he's back on tour. His new album features an Eminem song he's not allowed to do a video for and 'Angry White Boy Polka.' He'll be tickling the accordian ivories at the Aladdin at 8 p.m."
